What is Base64 Encode Decode?

Base64 is a method to convert binary data into plain text using 64 characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /). Our free online tool lets you encode any text or file into Base64, and decode Base64 back to original text. Developers, students, and testers use this daily for APIs, data URLs, email attachments, and embedding images in HTML/CSS.

Unlike other sites, TOOLVORA runs 100% in your browser. Your data never leaves your device, making it safe for passwords, tokens, and private text. It is part of our collection of 20+ free online tools.

How It Works

1. You type text in the Encode box.
2. JavaScript converts UTF-8 characters to bytes.
3. Bytes are grouped in 3 (24 bits) and split into 4 groups of 6 bits.
4. Each 6-bit value maps to a Base64 character.
5. For decoding, the reverse happens – Base64 chars → bits → UTF-8 text.

The process happens locally using the browser’s built-in functions with UTF-8 fix for Hindi, emoji, and special characters.

Base64 Formula

Base64 does not use a math formula like calculators, but the process is: Input bytes → 3 bytes = 24 bits → 4 × 6-bit groups → map to Base64 alphabet → add ‘=’ padding. Example: “Man” → ASCII [77,97,110] → binary → “TWFu”. This logic ensures safe text transfer across systems.

Common Uses of Base64 in India

Indian developers use Base64 daily for Aadhaar API integrations, UPI payment gateways, and government portals. When you upload a PAN card image to an income tax site, it’s often converted to Base64. Mobile apps use this encoding to send images over JSON APIs because JSON cannot handle raw binary. Email systems like Gmail use Base64 for attachments. Our base64 encode decode tool is perfect for students learning web development in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and across India.

Base64 is also used in Basic Authentication headers. When you see “Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNz”, that’s username:password encoded. Remember, this is NOT secure – always use HTTPS. For testing APIs with Postman or curl, our encoder saves valuable time during development.

Base64 vs Other Encodings

Unlike Hex encoding which doubles size, Base64 increases size by only 33%. URL encoding is for web addresses, Base64 is for data transport. UTF-8 is character encoding, Base64 is data encoding. Our tool handles all UTF-8 characters correctly, including ₹ symbol, Hindi text, and emojis, which many old encoders fail on. This makes it ideal for Indian languages and modern web applications that need reliable data conversion.

FAQ

Is Base64 encryption? No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it. Use it for data transport, not security.
Is my data saved? No. TOOLVORA processes everything in your browser. We do not store data. Read our Privacy Policy.
Does it support Hindi? Yes. Our base64 encode decode tool uses UTF-8, so Hindi, Tamil, emoji work perfectly.
Why ‘=’ padding? Base64 output must be multiple of 4 characters, so ‘=’ padding is added.
Is it free? Yes, completely free with no signup, like all TOOLVORA tools.
